[sigh] That’s me all caught up following a week of my Mother. Such a relief she’s gone I can’t tell you! Great post at hopeful parents – yes you can leave Riley, had she gone off on her own I would say not such a great idea but she was sensible and stayed at the house. Good on her and good on you for being brave enough to trust in her abilities.
She’s old enough to do this for short intervals. She did good handling that situation, and learned from it. So did you. You learned you have a good neighbor and can depend on her. If we don’t give them some independence and responsibility, how will they learn to handle it?

The day the child realizes that all adults are imperfect, he becomes an adolescent; the day he forgives them, he becomes an adult; the day he forgives himself, he becomes wise. -Alden Nowlan, poet, novelist, and playwright (1933-1983)
