HT ain’t complainin’

I’m going to come right out and say it, I smell good.

I happened upon a bottle of Love’s Baby Soft the other day at CVS. I didn’t even know they still made it! Let me just say, it was seven dollars well spent.

In my memoir Daughter of the Drunk at the Bar (did I mention I wrote a book?LOL) there are many eighties cultural references. One thing that got play was Love’s Baby Soft cologne. It was the smell to have when I was in Jr. High. Love’s Baby Soft ads graced the pages of Seventeen Magazine, and who wouldn’t have wanted to look like a Love’s Baby Soft model? Their skin dewy, their hair always perfection, it was something to strive for.

Probably every guy in his forties will recognize the smell. Perhaps they’ll catch a whiff as I walk by, and won’t know why… but a memory of slow dancing with so & so from 7th grade might suddenly waft it’s way into their thoughts. It’s powerful stuff.

Ladies, I suggest you march yourselves down to the nearest CVS, and splurge on a bottle.

Cause yo, “Some of the nicest things happen in Love’s Baby Soft.”

I remember that; I saw it, too Michelle! I liked Love’s Rain — you can get a bunch of these things at that Vermont Country Store on line, too!

  2. Oh, that takes me back! I also remember Charlie. I can bring home the bacon…

  3. Sally says:

Mercy. Cracks me up. And that ad, whew. Happy memories. Just need to add some Chic jeans.

I bought a bottle at Target a couple of years ago! Like you, I had no idea they still made it and was sentimentally delighted. I still love it. I remember there was also a Love’s lemon scent that I liked — but Baby Soft was my fave.

What a flashback…esp. since I think the girl in the ad above is wearing my 8th grade graduation dress.

  5. Carrie Link says:

I cannot believe they still make that stuff. Just reading this made me conjure up the smell!

  6. Meg says:

OMG! She is wearing my junior prom dress! Jessica McClintock, if memory serves!

  7. Me says:

    I’m going to try it!

I’m so glad I have you listed again on my blogroll!

I’m with Carrie. I can smell it now, too. Ahh, that lovely pink potion! I wonder if it would remind Bubba of anything. For now, he insists his favorite scent on me would be something related to bacon. If I just put a little pork fat behind each ear…

  9. Meg,

I hope you rocked the bow around your neck. *M*, same goes for you.

  10. I remember going up and down the aisles of the drugstore while my mother shopped next door for groceries — and Love’s Baby Soft was just one of the many “cosmetics” I adored. How about Jean Nate? And Bonne Bell Lip Smackers — those huge ones? I think I AM going to CVS and get me some Love’s — take me back.

  11. Do it Elizabeth! LOL.

    Dear Michelle,
Having been a teen-ager in the ’50s, I missed Love’s Baby Soft, but I can see that it’s evoked delight in your readers! How scent can take us back to another time.

    Peace.

  13. I remember Loves Baby Soft, Charlie & Tribe…….. Tribe was actually my favourite – I wonder if they still make that?????

  14. Suzy says:

Wow!! I had been telling my daughters that Love’s Baby Soft was THE cologne back in junior high and high school. Guess what they got me for Christmas?!? Oh, does that scent take me WAAAAAY back!!
