If icicles make you happy, have I got a post for you!

These icicles are currently hanging off the roof of our second story back porch.

Today I chipped ice off my windshield, inch by inch, in order to take the kids to dance class.

That’s right. Rain, snow or ice, on Wednesdays, Seth and Riley get to work on their moves.

The teacher knows Seth’s love of Michael Jackson, so she loads up her ipod with Smooth Criminal and PYT, etc. Riley prefers The Cha Cha slide. It’s a therapeutic dance class. Modified. Just two other kids besides them, and half the time they don’t show up so it is almost private. In the beginning, the wonderful young teacher wanted to know my goals. Balance? Coordination? Depth perception? Stamina, c’mon, what are we working on?

I told her my goal for both of them was joy. She looked stunned for a milisecond, but then raised her eyebrow and grinned. She totally got it.

And boy are they havin’ some fun!

If they feel more confident at dances or weddings or social events that will be a bonus, but the goal is joy.

As I type, I realize none of this has anything to do with icicles.

Then again, I never promised you a rose garden.

Or a blog post that made sense.

Then again, maybe icicles bring you joy.

It’s very possible I nailed it.

No need to thank me.

  1. Holy cow, those icicles look huge! And dancing is awesome. I love the sound of their class and the teacher who gets it!

Dude – are you high on homeschooling?

  3. -e- says:

What do you mean? This post has plenty to do with the icicles… the dance class is just one more experience you offer them, all of which solidify, drop by drop, to create something surprisingly strong, clear, and beautiful. 🙂

I don’t know quite what to say.

    Icicles?

    Go with it.

    Okay.

    BTW, I like the teacher.

Icicles make me happy – as in, I don’t have them!

    Perfect.’extracurricular’.

  6. -e-,

Are you a poet? What beautiful imagery!

  7. Courtney says:

I DO NOT like icicles. However, I love the idea of joy being the goal. That’s going to be my resolution for 2010: set goal of joy.

  8. Kim says:

How I absolutely LOVE that you said “Joy” in response to her inquiry! I know I’m always thinking of the things that need work regarding the Roc and I have to keep JOY in mind.

    Very good reminder.

So glad I don’t have any icicles right now! It’s cold but you can keep those icicles!

    Holy Icicles Batman!!

  10. Amanda says:

and I thought we had icicles….just goes to show every-thing’s bigger in America!

  11. Bonnie says:

I have the same icicles. And if this is like previous winters, soon we’ll have water dripping from our windows. And this class sounds like great fun.

  12. naomi says:

The perfect reason to dance…why dance at all, if not for joy?

  13. kario says:

What a terrific mother you are, to recognize that the kids need some joy in their lives. I am so pleased that they are having a good time and I’ll bet you’ve taught their dance teacher a thing or two, too.

As for the icicles, they make me hope that once you got home, there was some hot chocolate to be had!

  14. -e- says:

Not a poet, I just sometimes have a good moment…

  15. Carrie Link says:

JOY! That’s a goal we need to all spend a little more time pursuing!

    Love.

  16. Jerri says:

You may not see a need to thank you, but I do. I’m stealing the idea of making joy a goal. Right. Now.

    Thank you.

  17. I HOPE you’re high on homeschooling.
